ASK- but with the right "attitude"!

All Praise to Allah (S) - for always being there for us, being attentive to us, and providing us with more than we ask for - despite us being very unworthy beings!

Often, I feel He gives us more than we deserve - on the contrary to our usual complain of why He doesnt provide us with certain things we continuously beseech from Him. I have lately been pondering on a common sight in many Indian soaps and drama's on TV - where, particularly, the Hindu's beseech from their Gods with their full right of being a creation of their God (emphasis on - He made them so they depend on him to completely change things, even if what they ask for is miraculous).

It amazes me to see how much confidence they have in their Gods that they say to their Gods that if a certain thing doesnt happen for them, they will never do the certain act of pooja (prayer) or believe in the God's power or existence, etc. And well, the drama's always show that God has listened to them because what they are beseeching seems reasonable and favorable to move along for the story line of the drama / should the same situation arise in reality.

I wouldn't encourage the supposed 'threats' to God - saying we will stop praying or lose belief in Him if He didn't work something out for us as we desired..because we have been brought up with the religious belief and etiquette to "Ask for what's best for us" (Ref. to Du'a as Samaat and many other du'as where we recite: waf 'al bee ma ah-lahu wa laa taf 'al bee maa ah-lahu meaning "and do to me what suits You and do not do to me what I deserve" ) and accept whatever we get as part of Allah's will and mas-lehat (His undoubted and unimaginably Endless Wisdom). Here we show confidence in Allah's Wisdom over our desires - and it makes complete sense to me..

However someone recently debated over this saying that if Allah (SWT) is 'Qaadir' -having power and might over all things (as we recite in our du'as: "Innaka 'ala kulli shayy-in qadeer" meaning "and You (Allah) indeed have Power and Qudrat over all things and creations!")- then why do we say to Him "Please listen to my du'a and accept my Haajaat, if it is the best for me".. Rather, why don't we say to Him "What I beseech from you Allah (S), please make it the best thing for me and make it happen for me" -with that same confidence that Allah (S) can make anything happen..ANYTHING!

I am just sharing this, as it really had me thinking too.. Maybe we can brainstorm on this as - Mashallah, from the previous Poll on 'Matches made in heaven' - it is but obvious, that the more we comment, the more others get awareness and different insight on the topic.

Speaking of which, my final piece and judgment on Matches made in Heaven - will be up sometime later next week..Jazaakallah for your profound thoughts, comments, references, experiences, and participation :)

And before I forget why exactly I wrote this up today was, that this morning - I got up to find a wonderful gift from a wonderful friend. She had actually scanned off this Du'a for me to specially share with ALL OF YOU (my enthusiastic blog readers :)) called Du'a e Hasaar. (from Imaamiya Jantri 2002)

The benefits derived from this du'a are numerous, and the method of reciting it is:
1) Recite Surah al Hamd thrice
2) Recite this Du'a
3) Beseech your haajaat

(Click on the image for an enlarged and clearer view of the du'a)

It is supposed to be a powerful du'a, if you ponder on the words (and if you can read urdu - the translation of every verse is found below them) - since it comprises of humble words of recognizing our unworthy selves, being under the protection and closeness of the Holy ones - near and dear to Almighty Allah (S)!

Should any of you need the transliterated version, just email me :) I'll write it up for you and send it through

So till then, remember me in du'as (and special du'as for the friend - who doesn't wish to be named - who sent this du'a for all of us to benefit from..Jazaakallah khair)

Any thoughts on the right way to beseech your Du'as from the Almighty? Comment then!
Sadaf Zahra :)

assalam alaikum!!

lovely topic, i must say!!
i'd like to say two things, firstly, as you said that if we beleive that Allah (S.W.T.) is the All Powerful and Qadir, then why do we say to Him "Please listen to my du'a and accept my Haajaat, if it is the best for me " and why not "What I beseech from you Allah (S), please make it the best thing for me and make it happen for me" -

My logic behind this is tht we do not know what is good for us and what is not. He is the All-Knowing, He knows what is best not only for one person, but for all. hence, whatever happens is the one with the greatest 'net' benefit, not only for one, but for the others also who get affected by tht haajat! moreover, the long and short term vision is considered here. we basically know about the current state of affairs. Allah (S.W.T.) however knows about what was, what is and what will be. so, His decision cannot be wrong!

secondly, the question as to the right WAY of praying to him.. i think that the foremost thing we should have in our hearts while praying is sincerity. we should pray with submission to Him, with the faith in him that if what we asked for is good for us, and others around us, it will be granted!!

lastly, i'd like to say tht one should never be disheartened if what one asks for does not come one's way. one should, at no cost, think that Allah (S.W.T.) does not listen to him or her, because such is not the case. Allah (S.W.T.) always looks after everyone, all of his creation. He never shuns anyone! one should just trust in Him and know that whatever happens, happens for a reason.. a reason which one might not know!

Supplication is in its real sense the act of understanding your very existence. It is after you realise why and from what were you created, that you would be able to respond more profoundly. So I agree with the title ... "ASK - but with the right attitude". Attitude here refers to inner reflection, or intrinsic evaluation. Attitude is the reflection of our innermost thoughts - and hence, plays a vital role in most actions. At this stance, for supplication.

Would you agree sis Sadaf, that supplication is universal. Unlike many other degrees that we study for, supplication doesnot require any special tutoring. It is an art crafted on sentiments. So we cannot classify any form of supplication mal-efficient. Just my scattered thoughts ... :)

I will definately read the dua as well. Thank you very much.

With regards,

Jazaakallah khair!

Sr. Mardhiya
I totally agree with you - indeed DU'A is an interpretation of our sentiments and submissiveness infront of the Almighty (All-Mighty..All Powerful..and Creator for All) and definitely needs no tutoring. It is something that we express if not in our own words, then in words that have been polished and beautified with the immaculate touch of the Ma'sumeen (A) - Alhamdulillah!

However, sometimes people do du'a just for the sake of fulfillment of Haajaat - without ma'rifat of what they recite..sometimes, they do du'a with an uncertainty in their hearts.. or sometimes, don't supplicate at all with the lack of confidence that He is hearing to our call..

and most of us would do du'a, beseeching from Allah what's best for us.
What made me write this blog post was the remark of a brother who said - if Allah has power over all things, then He can surely make anything happen. So ask from Him, what you want and ask Him to make it the best for you......because He can do more than miracles that we can imagine!

It's all the different kinds of attitudes we have towards communicating with the Almighty (S)
May we all be successful in our plea to Him! Ameen
Rem me in du'as! Sadaf Zahra

Thank you for your most beautiful, informative and exquisite reply ... however, I would wish to keep this discussion going, if you would'nt mind. :)

The underlying treasures behind the phenomenon of supplication is immense. Probably even beyond man's imagination. When Allah asks mankind to do something, it is for the benefit of mankind itself.

We know that Allah is very near to us, even closer than the Jugular Vein. He knows what lies in the heart, even before the sigh escapes. He knows what inexpressed emotions are within us, our sufferings, ailments and requirements. We are transparent to Him - He sees the unseen, feels the unknown.

So why supplicate to Him, when He is already aware of all our short-comings?

In the tafseer of the verse which you quoted earlier; 'Call unto Me, and I will answer you' we read that supplication serves for two noble reasons. First, it forms a boundary around man - stops him from drifting towards evil. And secondly, it makes man's weak nature feel the sweetness of having the protection and guardianship of All-Mighty Allah. It gives him confidence, brushes his inner thoughts and enables him to live life free from all forms of psychological stressors.

Now lets get back the topic at hand ... I want to elaborate on what you have earlier mentioned.
However, sometimes people do du'a just for the sake of fulfillment of Haajaat - without ma'rifat of what they recite..sometimes, they do du'a with an uncertainty in their hearts.. or sometimes, don't supplicate at all with the lack of confidence that He is hearing to our call..

Sister Sadaf, supplication without belief is like dust particles in air. It moves on as the wind current flows; without any purpose, without any cause. I would like to quote Imam Sadiq's narration on this topic. Subhan'Allah, we have an answer for every question; a healing for every wound ... this is the beauty of Islam!

Imam al-Sadiq (s) said: Almighty Allah never answers an inattentive prayer. So when you are praying, make sure that you do it with all your heart and be certain, then, that it will be answered.

I will seal my discussion with another beautiful hadith.

Imam al-Sadiq (s) said: Ask Allah for whatever you need - even for something as insignificant as a slipper’s top - for He is the only one who can make things attainable.

Iltemase' dua,
W/salam.

MashAllah great comments by all.. what I wud like to add (well.. my two pence worth) is just How I got to feel the true essence of DUA'A. Never can we do it on our own ofcourz..and the beautiful lines that helped me are the great words of Imam Ali Zainul Abideen (AS) in one of his Supplications, I am sure u all must have read it:

"Ilaahi Kaifa Aado'oka wa Anaa Anaa, Wa Kaifa Aqta'oo Raja'aee Wa Anta Anta"
"O Lord, How shall I beseech (and) When I am I, and how shall I (cut)lose hope in you, when You are YOU!!"

What is it that gives us - (Sinful Creation) to beseech Allah in as little and as big a problem or need that we have. It is the trust and hope in Him. As even mentioned in the Hadith of our 6th Imam put up by Sr. Mardhiya. Without trust, there's no chance of our dua'as getting accepted. My point is Just that we people, who have committed enormous sins and know that every difficulty, a believer faces is because of his own sins as mentioned in the Holy Qur'an, the Lord that does and plans only the very best for His servants, has opened doors to all believers to beseech and ask His help. He, His Mercy and readiness to accept OUR dua's is beyond our imagination and ability to think. And then, His benevolence and mercy comes to the believer's aid in any way it is.. either the Dua'a being accepted....OR Rejected because of the reasons we all know (because that too - is a Blessing in Disguise). I am sure that the next time we spread our prayer mat to call unto HIM, the words mentioned from the Dua'a wud be a great dose to revive our Trust and Confidence in HIM. ;)
