Mourning the death of our Conscience..

After ten days of rigorous replenishment of the soul (well atleast I hope that it DID manage to replenish bits of us, if not our whole selves) I realised that every Majlis and lecture I attended, somehow only brought one thing to my mind..

Imam Husayn (AS) took his family and friends to save ISLAM and revive the conscience of the Ummah - why? Because society had extremely deteriorated in moral values, such that they saw the wrong happening infront of them but didn't stand against it - as long as it didn't involve them. The supposed-Muslims who fought against him were amongst those who prayed Salaat regularly and on time, and were Haafiz-e-Qur'an; those who performed their ibaadaat in excess. Yet, they chose to ruthlessly kill the grandson of the Holy Prophet of Allah (SWT)- he who brought Islam to them!

Imam Husayn (AS) reasoned that the people of his time prayed to the same Lord he prayed to; and rendered their services (worship) to the same Lord and same religion. But their morals and conscience had died as a result of HARAAM RIZQ (Wealth and Food)

Makes me wonder: Aren't we - in the present times, living the same kind of death of Moral values?
Our society today is pretty much evolving around the same issue: excess ibaadaat (worship) but lack of moral values and conscience; a moral system of 'self-centredness' - if something doesn't involve us and doesn't hurt us, then we don't bother lending a helping hand or thought, or even a second of our time for that matter.

Raises the question up in my head - are our bellies filled with Haraam food and wealth too? That the call of Imam and his sacrifice have a temporary effect on us? And we need to be reminded every year, what we forget after the 2 months of mourning are over?

Aren't we really pretty much the same kind of people - aiming for perfection in our worship (ibaadaat) and our knowledge ('ilm) , but dead in our conscience? Aren't we as useless for Imam-e-Zamaana (ATF) as the Muslims were as an Ummah for Imam Husayn (AS)??
Aren't we like the people of Kufa, calling out to Imam-e-Zamaana (ATF) - but not ready to give up our lives, wealth and families for his cause?

Alas! After Imam's great sacrifice, we are still too dead in conscience to be able to tell between right and wrong! We are still too dead to let go of our materialism, our egotism, our self-centred attitude.. We are still too dead to think that we have accomplished everything merely through our Ibaadaat (worship) and our Knowledge ('ilm)..

I can only weep on the death of our conscience; and pray for the upliftment of our society..
Ya Imam-e-Zamaan, adrikniyy!

You are so right about today's world. People are so pretentious and if they hear anyone raising their voice against the wrong then they are stranded.

At times when I speak the truth or stand against a wrongful action, ppl ignore me saying that i get too hyper and serious and that only dismays me.

I wish everyone gets the courage to stand against wrong these days.

You're right. We have changed our lives in a way that's so called known as Modern. But we've grown to neglect the real values of Islam.

Yep ..agree with you. I do feel that we are perhaps getting modern in technology but morally we are still in avery lost state. Our mental or spiritual journey has still not got past many hurdles!

You are absolutely right about the death of our conscience.

In fact
The feeling that builds up during these days ( Moharram/Safar )is gradually fading away.
Two months of mourning are merely words now.
First Ten Days of Moharram are so crowded that you have to reach the bargah early as possible or else will not get a proper place to sit where u can listen to the Majlis attentively, but from 11th Moharram onwards, you just wonder where are all the people gone. Its really amazing. I ask myself "Are we really mourning the martys or turning the incident of kerbala into traditon to be followed by the future generation?"

Masha'Allah gr8 write up, stuff which had been wandering up in my head as well but in a different sense may be, which i can add as a proof of our dead conscience; is the loss of respect - out of true grief - that our earlier generations had to the month of Muharram itself.....

Listing down a no. of things that were done as a sign of mourning which i believe helped in creating a deeper and truer sense of the mourning of Imam Hussain (A):
(1) The Television (and all such entertaining activites) use to be turned on after Ashoora and at times closed for a whole month or even more..now ppl dnt mind watching in the first ten days as well ...wether they are cartoons for kids, same old saas bahoo T.V serials or in the name of news. Jab hamare qaum ki aurtein imam ke ghum main serials nahi chorh sakti tou.. ... ... ... wat more to say...?

(2)People use to fold their mattresses (chaarpais - as in old days) and sleep on the floor - well if we do that today ppl will call us BACKWARD!!
Men and Women alike did not apply Oil
Women did not apply kajal esp in the first ten days - what to say abt the masscara and all that make up worn by girls and ladies coming to majalis esp with that COOL shiny lip stick and that too glossy!!!

I have literally seen this and is it all in the name of MODERNIZATION????!!! Sorry to be rude but i just got a place to express my anger .....Is this how we would mourn on the death of our Imam and then the difficulties and troubles faced by Aseeraan e Karbala??

However such ppl who do so even disappear after 10th until next muharram!!

You bet its the death of our conscience!

Death of our conscience or death of our spirits?

If we were to base our judgement on an unbiased scale then with sheer disappointment, I must admit to the fact that most of us have even forgotten the tradition of mourning in its right essence. Mourning is a culture. It is a school where we are attend to not only uplift our souls but also desert our false desires - the very chain of desires which Imam Ali (as) quoted while saying these harm men more than anything.

Sis Sadaf, alas we've forgotten so much and are evolving into what we call modern shias - not knowing modernism if deprives us of the true lantern of our faith, then must be abolished.

I agree with Adeela on many points. Pity we prefer to globalise ourselves on the cost of us straying from the spirit of Islam.

What more to weep on? The loss of the spirit for which our Imam (as) sacrificed his life ...

Wassalaam.

to add to Adeela Apa's list:
these are just little things which I noticed, this probably dosent happen everywhere but I dont know just makes me angry! :/
3)The other day, at Husayniah... someone needed a chair to sit on but she couldn't find one. So she was just standing next to the chairs and on one of the chairs, this girl was sitting but she wouldnt get up! Seriously, its like no one has respect for older people!
4)Also, on the 10 days of Moharram, everyone tries their hardest to come to the majalises, but after that... you see that the imambargahs are empty! its not only the first 10 days that are important *uh* probably everyone got too busy with their TV Serials and watching all the recaps which they missed the 10 days >.>

Our moral values truly have died
sorry but i had to bring this up!!!- (5) All the Nauha Khwans... they're nauhas has become big time competition! Each one tries to get more people buying their cassettes, more and more nauhas have more catchy tunes to them. Instead of listening to songs, people now listen to these song-like nauhas in Moharram! ---> this is what annoys me most *disgust*

We are still too dead to let go of our materialism, our egotism, our self-centred attitude.. We are still too dead to think that we have accomplished everything merely through our Ibaadaat and our Knowledge
I agree... you couldnt have put it down in a better way!

Wsalam

Asalam waleikum,

wonderful post MashaAllah
before the coming of Muharram i had promised myself that this time i will truly try to lose myself in Karbala, try and be there with Imam Hussain (as), and not pay attention to anything else as i normally do, not allow my attention to wonder at the mosque and so on. so maybe because i had become extra sensitive to any diversion on my own part, i also became aware of the tragic lack of any roohaniath in our azadari, the lack of our heart & soul in the condolences we claim to offer Sayeda Fatema (as)
Everything you mentioned is so true..and so sad.
I remember hearing in a lecture recently, that Imam Hussain was not mazloom that day in Karbala, he was sacrificing everything for Allah (swt) out of his choice, but he is mazloom today when he must be seeing the type of Shiah we have become..
I pray for all our guidance, thankyou for such a relevant post.

In my opinion, mainly the problem is to understand the philosophy of moral values? and what goals to be achieved with in it?
Why we are Human/Muslim and Shia.
we are Muslim because we born in Muslim family. But I think that god trust us to create Human/Muslim/Shia.Now Its up to ourselves to perform the duties of these titles, by practising the believes.
First, we has to think that are we happy with ourselves ?what are the main objectives/standards to be Identified? then ultimately, we has to believe in moral values/standards.
our holy prophet(PBUH) proved to bring up the moral values by practicing on his believes. but unfortunately in the result of saqifa all the efforts were going to waste. because the Muslim were not practicing the laws. They were just doing namaz.hifze quran wwww but they left the HUJATE KHUDA which is the Origin/spirit of Islam. When the society left the leaders alone(like a ship without captain)GOD knows. What happen next
unfortunately! Our IMAM is still alone .............

For more details read SHAHID MURTAZA MUTEHRI BOOK Eternity of Moral Values

hope fully we believe/practice accordingly
