Mourning the death of our Conscience..

After ten days of rigorous replenishment of the soul (well atleast I hope that it DID manage to replenish bits of us, if not our whole selves) I realised that every Majlis and lecture I attended, somehow only brought one thing to my mind..

Imam Husayn (AS) took his family and friends to save ISLAM and revive the conscience of the Ummah - why? Because society had extremely deteriorated in moral values, such that they saw the wrong happening infront of them but didn't stand against it - as long as it didn't involve them. The supposed-Muslims who fought against him were amongst those who prayed Salaat regularly and on time, and were Haafiz-e-Qur'an; those who performed their ibaadaat in excess. Yet, they chose to ruthlessly kill the grandson of the Holy Prophet of Allah (SWT)- he who brought Islam to them!

Imam Husayn (AS) reasoned that the people of his time prayed to the same Lord he prayed to; and rendered their services (worship) to the same Lord and same religion. But their morals and conscience had died as a result of HARAAM RIZQ (Wealth and Food)

Makes me wonder: Aren't we - in the present times, living the same kind of death of Moral values?
Our society today is pretty much evolving around the same issue: excess ibaadaat (worship) but lack of moral values and conscience; a moral system of 'self-centredness' - if something doesn't involve us and doesn't hurt us, then we don't bother lending a helping hand or thought, or even a second of our time for that matter.

Raises the question up in my head - are our bellies filled with Haraam food and wealth too? That the call of Imam and his sacrifice have a temporary effect on us? And we need to be reminded every year, what we forget after the 2 months of mourning are over?

Aren't we really pretty much the same kind of people - aiming for perfection in our worship (ibaadaat) and our knowledge ('ilm) , but dead in our conscience? Aren't we as useless for Imam-e-Zamaana (ATF) as the Muslims were as an Ummah for Imam Husayn (AS)??
Aren't we like the people of Kufa, calling out to Imam-e-Zamaana (ATF) - but not ready to give up our lives, wealth and families for his cause?

Alas! After Imam's great sacrifice, we are still too dead in conscience to be able to tell between right and wrong! We are still too dead to let go of our materialism, our egotism, our self-centred attitude.. We are still too dead to think that we have accomplished everything merely through our Ibaadaat (worship) and our Knowledge ('ilm)..

I can only weep on the death of our conscience; and pray for the upliftment of our society..
Ya Imam-e-Zamaan, adrikniyy!
